Comment:
Siphuthi (10746) = Vulnerable (80 percent certain, based on the evidence available) (While preconditions exist for the language to begin the slide towards obsolescence and death, Phuthi has not yet begun to do this in a significant way... Children playing outside speak almost exclusively Phuthi with one another... children acquire Phuthi first and often do not command Sotho and Xhosa until they begin going to school.)

(see Donnelly 1999)

E16/E17/E18/E19/E20/E21/E22/E23/E24/E25/E26/E27/E28 lists Phuthi as a dialect of Swati [ssw] but the two are not intelligible ( Donnelly, Simon Scurr 2007: 7 ) and the phylogenetic analysis of Nguni languages makes it unlikely that is intelligible to any other either ( Gunnink, Hilde and Natalia Chousou-Polydouri and Koen Bostoen 2023: 20-21 ). It thus merits a language entry of its own. See also: Swati [ssw].
