No historical connection to another sign language has been documented ( Pizzuto, Elena 2001 ) so the language is a presumed isolate. Nevertheless, it is subsumed under the umbrella term Tunisian Sign in Aymen Nefaa (2023) but it is not clear whether this implies closeness. Aymen Nefaa (2023) also contains a lexical comparison to LSF (but not to any other language) but the outcome in the low 30%:s range is inconclusive of a genealogical relationship.
