abstract = {Mayogo, an Adamawa-Eastern language of the Niger-Congo family, has an unusual vowel system in that it has a rarely found high central (-advanced tongue root) (ATR) vowel with the result that the system is asymmetrical with respect to the feature (ATR). This study accounts for this system by first acoustically measuring a Mayogo speaker's vowels and then locating the vowels in the speaker's vowel space. The key acoustical measures needed to differentiate the vowels are also determined. The study then analyzes the Mayogo vowel harmony system using the Clements' (1980) autosegmental model. His model does not adequately account for the Mayogo data. The autosegmental model developed modifies the Halle and Vergnaud (1981) model with Pulleyblank's (1986) theory of underspecification and default rules. Further, Halle and Vergnaud's (1981) well-formedness condition is restricted in its application to the morpheme boundary, and a language-specific leftward spreading rule for (+ATR) is included to account for Mayogo's vowel harmony system.},
