  abstract              = {To this date, an extensive tone analysis of the African language of Bandi has not been available. This thesis is an analysis formed from data gathered during the author's six and a half years of work for The Institute for Liberian Languages in Liberia, W. Africa. Knowledge gained from this analysis of Bandi is also used to provide a tone analysis for the related language of Mende, which with Bandi is one of the five members of the Southwest Mande language family. The model used to describe tone rules is that of John Goldsmith's autosegmental phonology. This analysis deals mainly with concrete forms. However, where synchronic data and comparison with related language cognates appear to point to an historical segment, abstract segments and related tone melodies are posited.},
