  abstract              = {This thesis provides a relatively comprehensive description of the verbal system of Logo, a Central Sudanic language spoken in north-eastern Zaire. Phonological, morphological, and syntactic structures are described, the latter two from a functional-typological perspective. Areas of particular interest are word order typology, aspect, tense, and modality, and referent tracking in clause-chaining constructions. Basic word order is SVO; however, the direct object is fronted before nonfinite verbs (i.e. OV) which follow finite auxiliaries and occur in chained nonfinite clauses. The fronted direct object relates to the nonfinite verb in a structure parallel to a genitive construction in a noun phrase. Realis and irrealis modalities are marked morphologically. The realis form marks clauses which are strongly asserted as true, including foreground information in narratives. The referent-tracking system involves nonfinite verb suffixes which identify the subject and/or object of chained nonfinite clauses.},
