The analyses of accentual and related phonological processes are presented in a nonlinear theory of phonology that includes the notion of the syllable. The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the topic, presents an overview of Iroquoian morphology, and summarizes the major points of the theoretical framework. The second chapter is a description of Mohawk accent and related processes, the third chapter is devoted to Oneida, the fourth to Onondaga, and the fifth to Cayuga and Seneca. The sixth and final chapter is a brief summary of Proto-Northern-Iroquoian accent and of the accentual developments in each of the languages discussed. The description of Mohawk, Oneida and Onondaga is based on fieldwork by the author. The Mohawk, and Oneida chapters, which represent the languages in which the most extensive fieldwork was done, include also detailed descriptions of nonaccentual phonological processes. The descriptions of Cayuga and Seneca accent are based on published works by other authors. Explanations for the relevant historical changes in individual languages, for example, e-epenthesis in Mohawk and *r-loss in Onondaga, are proposed.}, bestfn = {north_america\michelson_iroquoian1983_o.pdf}, besttxt = {ptxt2\north_america\michelson_cayuga1983_o.txt}, cfn = {north_america\michelson_iroquoian1983_o.pdf}, degree = {PhD}, delivered = {north_america\michelson_iroquoian1983_o.pdf}, digital_formats = {PDF 13.54Mb image-only PDF}, fn = {north_america\michelson_iroquoian1983_o.pdf, north_america\michelson_nations1983.pdf, north_america\michelson_cayuga1983.pdf, north_america\michelson_cayuga1983_o.pdf}, hhtype = {overview;phonology}, inlg = {English [eng]}, lgcode = {Mohawk [moh], Oneida [one], Onondaga [ono], Cayuga [cay], Seneca [see]}, macro_area = {North America}, source = {DAI-A 44/06, p. 1778, Dec 1983}, src = {hh}, subject = {LANGUAGE, LINGUISTICS (0290)}, umi_id = {8322414} }
