abstract = {Several meaningful phonological reconstructions of Tibeto-Burman (Benedict 1972) and Lolo-Burmese (Burlings 1967, Bradley 1979) have been completed. While these reconstructions have touched on Northern Burmic (Shafer 1966) languages such as Maru and Zaiwa, a classification within the Northern Burmic language family has not yet been completed. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a historical reconstruction of Proto Northern Burmic as well as a description of the Northern Burmic language family. Northern Burmic languages include Achang, Bela, Lashi, Maru, Phon, and Zaiwa. This thesis uses the comparative method to reconstruct Proto Northern Burmic relying primarily on data from these languages. Where no clear reconstruction is evident from this data, Written Burmese is used to aid in the reconstruction. The reconstruction of Proto Northern Burmic enables a better understanding of the history of Tibeto-Burman languages and helps to fill a niche in historical linguistics.},
