  abstract        = {This study describes pertinent ethnolinguistic information which can be sampled through a small scale field language survey to reveal indications of language vitality. Observations and data on the sociolinguistic environment of two minority languages (Phalura and Kalasha) spoken in Pakistan, are used to elucidate these pertinent ethnolinguistic features of objective language vitality. The observations and data were collected through a small scale field language survey in the district of Chitral in northwestern Pakistan during several short trips in the summers of 1989 and 1990. The dynamic situation where these two languages are spoken includes factors which are involved in language shift in some communities and factors serving to maintain the minority language in other communities. Case studies from the Phalura and Kalasha language communities will be presented, outlining the domains and choices related to the linguistic vitality of these languages.},
