  abstract              = {Since the beginning of this century, seven Zaparoan languages have become extinct in the Peruvian Amazon basin. Only one Zaparoan language still has a community of speakers, the Arabela people and language. This study traces the history of the Arabela people through this century and highlights the effect on language use of each major historical event. To attempt a principled prediction on language use in the Arabela community for the next generation, a response test was designed and implemented. The test, economical in terms of time, materials, cost and manpower, proved effective, displaying three different patterns of language use corresponding to the three languages spoken in the village.},
