abstract = {Mbili: A Linguistic Analysis explores the major component parts of the Mbili language from a primarily descriptive point of view. The study is broken down by chapter as follows: Chapter one is a general introduction, and defines Mbili in terms of its belonging to the Niger-Congo language group and to the Grassfield Bantu subgroup. Chapters two and three deal with phonology. Chapter two treats segmental phonology. It attempts an inventory of the sound segments of the language, differentiating the phonemes from the allophones, the simple vowels from the diphthongs, and the single consonants from the clusters. It also lays down rules for combining these segments by identifying and describing the morphophonemic processes involved. Chapter three focuses on the suprasegments, mainly, tone, stress, and intonation. It identifies the tone types and investigates the interaction of tone, tense, aspect, and mood, as well as the distribution of stress, tone, and intonation in Mbili. Segmental and suprasegmental phonemes are related in terms of what they require, tolerate, and exclude. Chapters four and five are concerned with noun morphology and verb morphology. Under noun morphology, a structural identification of the noun classes is established, and a functional/semantic categorization of the classifiers is determined. This chapter also studies the linguistic categories of Mbili. Verb morphology is concerned primarily with the temporal, aspectual, and modal categories of Mbili-identifying each one and showing how they relate. It also studies the semantics of the verb through a case grammar analysis. Chapter six dwells on syntax, a clause and sentence level of analysis. It explores clause patterns and elements within the simple sentence, defined syntactically through a string analysis. It also takes a look at compound and complex sentences formed through concord, apposition, co-ordination and subordination. Chomsky's phrase-structure grammar is used in chapters five and six in order to relate the underlying structure to the surface structure of analysis. Finally, an appendix contains, in the main, demonstration texts-intended both to ascertain the grammatical rules posited and to apply the proposed orthography.},
