Roots in these languages are lexically marked for the suprasegmental features of nasalization and tone, features I describe, analyze, and contrast with what I propose to be a third suprasegmental feature of roots: glottalization. The glottal stops that occur regularly in a subset of roots have been alternately analyzed in the ET literature as a secondary feature of vowels, as a full consonant segment, or as an articulatory phenomenon linked to tone. I review these analyses and contrast them with a presentation of glottalization as a third, independent suprasegmental feature of roots. I argue that the suprasegmental approach is applicable to a wider range of data and therefore demonstrates clear explanatory advantages over previous analyses.}, citekeys = {cldf4:typ_Stenzel_Wanano-Glottalization}, doi = {10.1086/521730}, hhtype = {specific_feature}, inlg = {English [eng]}, isreferencedby = {cldf4}, issn = {0020-7071}, lgcode = {Guanano [gvc]}, macro_area = {South America}, src = {cldf, haspelmath, hh, langsci} }
