  note             = {abstract : This research aims to analyse the linguistic description of the Cashinaua language (a Panolanguage) presented by the Brazilian researcher João Capistrano de Abreu (1853-1927) in his study entitled rã-txa hu-ni-ku-~i (published in 1914) with respect to its context of production and reception. The analysis comprises the concept of science and the patterns of social relationship that characterized the international scientific community devoted to the study of South-American languages and cultures during the years 1890-1929. In addition, Capistrano de Abreu's system of segmentation and categorization of words and their affixes in Cashinaua was identified and the descriptive accuracy of some of his analyses tested.
