abstract = {This study examines phonological variation in Bouyei, a Northern Tai language of China. Patterns of sound change are described using Bailey's (1973) dynamic wave model. Three-hundred-item word lists were collected from nine locations in Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. They were compared for tonal, initial and final consonant, and vowel correspondences. Results indicate that most sound changes have started in the west and are spreading east. The southeastern lects have preserved the most features of the original language. The southcentral lects have a more conservative vocalic system.},
