abstract = {This study investigates the syntactic and sociolinguistic contexts of Panamanian English Creole (PEC). Syntactically, PEC allows subject extraction from pre-verbal position in the presence of an overt complementizer without leaving a pronoun at the extraction site. Its pronominal system disobeys Principle B. So, an appropriate analysis of its pronouns must be both syntactic and pragmatic. Societally, PEC is the language of young bilingual (Spanish-Creole) Panamanian blacks. It is rooted in the history of West Indian immigrants, Panamanian blacks, Hispanic Panamanians, and Americans in the Republic of Panama whose special association set the stage for the sociolinguistic outcome known as Panamanian English Creole.},
