abstract = {This thesis reports the phonological system of Phu Kha, a variety of Phù Lá (Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Lolo-Burmese, Loloish) spoken in Vietnam. Phu Kha is found to have five tones and the syllable template (C1)(C2)V(C3). A discussion is presented as to the exact nature of the hierarchical structure of the Phu Kha syllable, but the question of whether C2 is a constituent of the onset or final is unresolved. Phu Kha is then compared to Xá Phó, the closest related language for which data are available. Consistent patterns of alternation between segments and tones are presented, suggesting a genetic relationship. With a cognition rate of only 42.1%, however, the two varieties are found to be two separate languages. Finally, a discussion of Phu Kha's place within the Northern Loloish sub-group is presented. Although Phu Kha is most closely aligned with the phonological features characteristic of Northern Loloish languages, it is unique for at least three reasons: the presence of initial clusters /tl dl kl gl/; the preservation of the syllable codas /m n n p/; and the merger of proto-high and proto-low tones in historically checked syllables.},
