Evidence for inclusion in Trans New Guinea is weak C. L. Voorhoeve 1975: 437-446 , especially lexically. The same can be said for a relation with Konda-Yahadian and the older West Papuan affiliation Berry, Keith and Berry, Christine 1987 . Inanwatan shows regular correspondences with (at least) languages in the East South Bird's Head subgroup Lourens de Vries 2024 .
